Irving Elementary School in Eugene is working toward its Oregon Green Schools certification. In December, students took a bag of cafeteria trash and learned how to separate the junk into different categories, like recyclable plastic, food, paper and so on.
“We believe that the education of students in how waste works…and when they see what’s happening at their school then…they bring that home with them, and it actually becomes part of them,” said Joshua Frankel, program coordinator.
The event was part of the school certification waste audit, which puts them one step closer to their goal. Right now 16 schools in Lane County are certified under the Oregon Green Schools Program.
